COLUMBIA COLLEGE

SUNDAY APRIL 12, 2009

ADC Chicago has expressed its outrage over the dismissal of Sue Haleem Smiley, a longtime instructor there and also a veteran journalist and radio producer at WLS AM Radio. Ms. Haleem-Smiley was fired from her teaching job in January 2009 after a student accused her of "anti-Semitism." Ms. Haleem-Smiley was never informed of the accusation when she was put on suspension and then fired, and only informed of the outrageous accusation after-the-fact. FURTHER, Columbia College officials denied Ms. Haleem-Smiley of her right to due process.

Columbia College officials have denied they discriminate, but have refused to respond to the charges; detail steps they took to protect Ms. Haleem-Smiley's rights; and failed to provide documentation showing how they are NOT discriminating against Arabs and Muslims by not disclosing how many Arabs work at Columbia College.

ADC-Chicago believes the dismissal of Sue Haleem-Smiley is the result of discrimination. We have demanded that Columbia College reinstate Sue Haleem-Smiley and have asked community groups to assist us in monitoring what we believe are discriminatory practices at Columbia College.
